What this site is

An independent comparison of the boat trips that snorkel Zanzibar's reefs, plus the practical information a visitor needs before booking one. We are not a tour operator, a travel agency or a seller of travel. We hold no bookings, take no payments and have no staff in Tanzania.

Every booking happens on the operator's own platform under their terms. If something goes wrong with a trip, the operator and the platform are who you deal with, not us.

Where the tour data comes from

Prices, durations, ratings, review counts, inclusions, age limits and cancellation terms are read directly off each operator's own listing and reproduced with the date they were read. Every tour page carries the same fields in the same order so six trips can be compared line by line, and each one states its own price-last-checked date.

We publish list prices rather than promotional prices. Two of these listings were showing discounts at the time of checking; using the sale figure would leave the page wrong the week the sale ends. We do not copy operator marketing descriptions, and where an itinerary time or an inclusion is quoted it comes from the listing's own itinerary block.

Where the fee information comes from

Zanzibar collects money in several places, and only some of it goes through the booking page. Charges are checked against official information and against the operators' own booking notes, then dated on the page.

Current figures verified in August 2026: the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation inbound policy at $44 per adult and $22 per child aged 3 to 17, mandatory since 1 October 2024 and valid 92 days; the Mnemba Marine Special Area at $25 per non-East African adult and $10 per child; other marine conservation areas at $10 per day since 1 September 2025; and $22 collected on the day on the Prison Island trip, made up of $10 marine conservation and $12 island entry, which the operator states has applied since 1 September 2025.

These have moved twice since 2024. Where a listing is silent on a charge, we say it is silent rather than assuming it is included.

Where the reef information comes from

Spot descriptions draw on published snorkeling spot surveys, conservation-area information, operator itineraries and the pattern across a year of dated traveller reviews. Species lists reflect what independent surveys record in snorkeling depth, not what tour highlights promise — which is why turtles and rays appear here as lucky sightings rather than features.

Climate and sea-temperature figures are long-term averages from published records, not a forecast. Where sources conflict, both numbers are printed with their source: operator listings quote 25 to 29°C year round, while an independent spot survey records 22 to 24°C between July and September.

How traveller feedback is used

Traveller feedback reviewed: more than 3,300 verified reviews across the six trips, plus each platform's own category sub-scores for guide, transport and value for money.

We quote reviews with the reviewer's first name, country and the month they travelled, exactly as published, and we do not edit them into something more flattering. Critical reviews are quoted alongside positive ones — including the reviewer who warned not to expect much from the coral, and the operator whose own booking notes describe other boats surrounding dolphins in a way that can resemble hunting. We never write testimonials.

What we cannot verify

We do not inspect the reefs, ride along on the boats, meet the crews or audit safety records. We cannot tell you whether the current at Tumbatu is manageable on the morning you go, whether a particular captain keeps his distance from a pod, or whether a listed inclusion appeared on the day.

We also cannot see live availability or the price you will be quoted for your date. The figures here are starting prices at the time of the check; the number that matters is the one on the checkout page.

How affiliate links affect this

Links to tours are affiliate links. If you book through one, the platform pays a commission and you pay the same price you would pay going directly. The full arrangement is set out in the affiliate disclosure.

Commission does not decide which tours appear, the order they sit in, or what is said about them. The best reef within reach of Zanzibar — Chumbe Island Coral Park — earns this site nothing at all, and we still tell you to book it directly with the island.

Corrections

Prices in Zanzibar move, conservation fees change and boats stop running. If a number here is out of date, tell us what you found and when you were there. Corrections get made and the check date on the page is updated with them.
